Egyptian Court Drops Protester-Death Charges Against Mubarak
An Egyptian court dropped charges against former President Hosni Mubarak of killing protesters during a 2011 uprising that ended his three-decade rule.Presiding Judge Mahmoud El-Rashidy also found Mubarak not guilty in a corruption case linked to the sale of natural gas to Israel in a verdict announced today in Cairo. The court acquitted former Interior Minister Habib El-Adli for his role in the deaths of the protesters.
The rulings came after an earlier life sentence imposed on Mubarak for the protester deaths was overturned. The verdict may be criticized by activists and Islamists who have complained that the election of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has merely allowed the reincarnation of Mubarak’s regime.
